Tickle's book, and in fact a lot of her work, has become central in the adult teaching I have been leading at my church. I believe, very strongly, that we stand on the precipice of a new age. I found that Tickle both in her book, and at a workshop that I attended led by her, put many pieces together to me.

I feel that she is a modern-day prophet. I agree, read this book. Then read it again.

Thanks for the great summary and review. I will be referring to it as I lead my last session on How Christianity is Changing and Why.

Thanks Curt. I agree with your suspicion of Tickle's interpretive grid, more so after a year's worth of reflection. I still think the book is worth reading, however, and I'm sure you will be someone whose critical eye can discern both the strengths and weaknesses of Tickle's argument. We need more readers like you.

Thinking of it as "God demands blood" confuses the issue, I think. A better way to look at it is that God demands justice, demands that sin be paid for with a punishment. Jesus suffered and died--gave Himself as a sacrifice--to satisfy the demands of justice. He didn't HAVE to suffer if He didn't want to. He was completely innocent and righteous. He willingly gave Himself because He loved us.

Our repentance activates His sacrifice on our behalf. We sacrifice a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Animal sacrifice in ancient Israel was meant to point the hearts of the people to the future sacrifice that Christ would make on their behalf. It was supposed to help them have faith in the Messiah (Christ). It was to be done away once Christ fulfilled His mission.

Thanks, Ben, for writing about this on your blog! Creighton and I have said many times how much we appreciated your service for the prayer initiative in May.
